Welcome to Summit4Water
Summit4Water was formed in 2010 following a visit to northwest Tanzania to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and explore the Serengeti Grasslands. While preparing for our visit and during the time spent in the region, it became abundantly clear that the people in the area needed our help. The lack of adequate supplies of clean drinking water were preventing children from attending classes at the local primary and secondary schools. Many of the local porters on our trip came from the Ndatu Village near Usa River where we learned that:
- 85% of the children in the local schools experienced extended absences due to severe bacterial infections from drinking contaminated water
- Primary students carry 40 pound buckets of water over a half a mile to school each day before classes begin
- Water samples we brought back to the US tested positive for E. Coli and Enterococcus. Bacterial contamination was 80 times the safe limit for clean drinking water
- High levels of fluoride contamination causes additional health hazards
With a clear understanding of the need, Summit4Water was organized with the following mission:
To partner with remote villages in Africa to provide a sustainable source of clean drinking water.
Project Update
We’ve raised over $90,000 of the $125,000 required and have made substantial progress (see our YouTube video) on the construction of the system. The water intake is complete, the reservoir is well underway and a substantial portion of the main feed lines are done.
How to Help
Please help us complete the project by contributing to one of the distribution links needed to bring water to the various neighborhoods of the region. A large distribution branch will serve 125-150 homes and will cost $3,500 to build. A medium branch will serve 75-100 homes and will cost $2,500.
